Numeracy Events

Numeracy Week 2014

At the end of the September I organised and ran my schools first ever numeracy week, with a theme of ‘Maths in the Movies’. Throughout the week, students in all subjects completed numeracy tasks within lessons. A few examples of this are: English where the pupils designed tension graphs; history where students made human timelines, French where the year 7 students did number sequences and PE where the students calculated the speed of their shots In hockey. There was a buzz of activity around the whole school, with both students and staff being excited and talking about numeracy across the curriculum throughout the week.

We were visited on the Wednesday by Dr Katie Steckles, from ‘Think Maths’, who gave interactive talks to studentss from year 7 to 9 on Freaky Probability. Within these talks, she managed to solve the rubrics cube in 1 minute and 27 seconds; the year 7 students were particularly in awe with this. Within years 10 and 11 she delivered a talk on Maths in the Simpsons to our higher examination pupils. Students were entranced by this talk and with several students saying they “can’t help but look for maths” every time they watch The Simpsons.

There was competitions and events happening throughout the week, with numeracy mazes in the library, the 1-100 challenge and the Mavatar competition for the Maths Twitter account launch.

Morning Form Time

Students within morning form time where ask to reflect on how numerate they had been and complete coding activities. The video clip is a small part of 'the knowing film' from YouTube.

Numeracy Tip Mats

I have spent time creating Numeracy4All mats on the topics I feel appear across the curriculum on a regular basis. Apologies if I missed any.
I have split the mats into the maths categories students will recognise.

  • Number
  • Shape, Space and Measure
  • Algebra
  • Data Handling

This resources is to support teachers and students in the mathematical methods and processes involved within the skills. When completing numeracy tasks related with one of the four areas place the relevant laminated mats on the students desks, these will work as a self help guide.

Morning Form Time Activities

Both students and teachers get frustrated with the lack of structure and useable resources for non-specialists. So within my NQT year I started to create mathematical activities for pupils to complete in their set numeracy time within Morning Form Time. Again these are a work in progress and I like to think at the moment the KS3 is developed a lot further than KS4 due to the structure of Morning Form Time within my school. KS4 is however on my to do list. As always this page is a work in progress.
